As the famed most ‘southerly point’ on continental USA, Key West is in most people’s perceptions when they plan a visit to the Florida Keys. We set out in this short post to highlight just a small handful of our favourite things to see and do in Key West.
Conch Tour Train
1805 Staples Ave., Key West. 294-5161 or 888-916-8687. See the best on the train tour that’s been entertaining visitors to the Island City of Key West since 1958. Key West Attractions Top Pick’s would not be complete without the tour of the Town with expert “engineers” and friendly staff who have delighted over 15 million guests. Your tour of Key West will give you a conch’s eye view of all Key West attractions.
We still go down most years and include an evening at Mallory Square. The place has certainly undergone a transformation in the past 20 odd years. However at the heart of downtown waterfront, whilst much has been modernised the Sunset remain as beautiful as ever. The evening parade of entertainers is as vibrant, edgy and exciting to watch as the first time we saw the spectacle. So for families visiting with us this remains a absolutely one of our Key West Attractions Top Pick’s. The center of Key West’s historic waterfront, Mallory Square stages the famous Key West sunset celebration. Historic Mallory Square and the city of Key West both had their beginning along this deep harbor waterfront – the wrecking schooners, the frigates and warships of the US Navy, the Cuban cigar makers tobacco warehouses, ship’s chandlers and government offices combined to make Key West a bustling seaport out on the frontier of a young America. Today, Mallory Square is a Key West must see. You will find exciting attractions, unparalleled shopping, the Key West historic sculpture garden and of course, every evening, the famous sunset celebration. https://www.mallorysquare.com/
Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory
1316 Duval St, Key West, FL 33040 305-296-2988 http://www.keywestbutterfly.com
As you wander among the touristy shopfronts of Duval St with it’s bars, restaurants, and tacky tourist shops. The strip joints, Biker memorabilia and adult entertainment venues, somehow Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory is at odds with some of it’s near neighbors. A little Oasis of ‘Jewels in Flight’. Home to 50-60 different species of live butterflies from around the world, including specimens of untold beauty from the Rainforest Morpho Butterfly. (Morpho menelaus), is one of over 80 described species of butterflies that reside in the rainforests. Morpho butterflies are neotropical butterflies found mostly in Central America as well as Mexico and South America including Brazil, Costa Rica and Venezuela. Morpho Butterflies dwell in the forest canopy layer and rarely come near the forest floor layers. It always brings back memories of a Panama Canal cruise we went on a few years back where the most surprising experience was the clouds of butterflies that descended on the ship as we made the initial passage into the Panama Canal to feed on the salt spray on the superstructure of the vessel. When you walk through the clouds of butterflies with their vivid iridescent colours you too will feel a sense of amazement. Which is why, we have included this venue in our Key West Attractions Top Pick’s.
